St. Eustatius DXpedition 2011

Latest news: 2011-10-21, 12:20 UTC

We feel good today and it seems we recovered after the journey and time zone change. Today we apeared on bands but then we started again the station setup work. We are going to mount the Spiderbeam today so our signals will surely be stronger. We will try to be active on 15 and 10 meters but in general look for us on all bands.

In the right panel of the website there is a link to online logs information. You can always check the online log as the logs are updated on a daily basis. We have internet access in the QTH so it is not a problem. Their online logs (located at ClubLog.org) inlcude last year and this year contacs. The ClubLog.org also generates DXpedition statistics.

On the air

The operation started. The first spot of PJ5/SP6IXF was seen on the DX Cluster at 18:47 UTC (it was 10 meters, phone) and next spots followed it very soon.  In the meantime some new pictures (already from St. Eustatius) were published in the picture gallery at: http://zoom.dxing.pl/index.php/SP-DXpeditions/PJ5-2011.

There was not much activity during the first day as it was the time to build the antennas and prepare the station setup. Additionaly Janusz PJ5/SP6IXF feels bad because of stomach problems and has a high fever.

After preparing the stations they both started their operation starting on 10 meters. They made about 300 QSOs and went sleeping to have a rest before the next day.

Finally on St. Eustatius

Yesterday (October 19) early afternoon we safety landed on Statia up to the schedule. Unfortunately we were changing plains so fast that our lagguge did’t follow us. The delayed laggage arrived yesterday evening with the last flight and antennas arrived today (October 20) in the morning.
We don’t fell too good because of stomach problems but we started to assembly antennas and preparing the station setup station.
We hope to be on the air late this afternoon local time.

On the way…

On October 19 in the early morning Janusz SP6IXF and Wlodek SP6EQZ entered the Warsaw Airport with all the luggage. There were no problems with the check-in. Of course the weight of all the parcels was over the allowed limit (they were prepared for it). Everything was done very quickly and without any problems.
Bogdan SP5WA and Tomek SP5UAF were in the airport to meet DXpeditioners and to have a coffee with them and to say “Hello” before their travel. It was a chance to talk about the plans. Janusz and Wlodek said that they will pay more attention to higher bands as the propagation conditions are much better than during their visit to PJ5 last year.
On the picture you can see Janusz SP6IXF and Wlodek SP6EQZ in the Warsaw Airport “Okecie” a few moments before they entered the security check and the restricted zone.
So next DXpedition news will come probably already from St Eustatius – they will arrive there in the late afternoon (October 19).

They’ve started…

Włodek SP6EQZ and Janusz SP6IXF in the afternoon on October 18 started they journey. The first step of their travel is going to Warsaw by car. They are going to spend the night in a hotel located close to the Warsaw Airport. Then in the early morning (05:00 UTC) they have their flight (they decided to be in Warsaw one day before the flight just “in any case”).

On the picture you can see Wlodek SP6EQZ (left) and Janusz SP6IXF (right) just a few minutes before they started they car drive from Wroclaw to Warsaw (about 360 kilometers).

Farewell Party

The farewell party took place at Wlodek’s home yesterday. It was attended by  by local Dx-men – SP6AEG, SP6EF, SP6LMQ and SQ6R, members of SPDX Club. Strategy of operation on the bands and final equipment review took place. It was decided that during the high SFI the special attention should be given to 12 & 10 m band . Despite more as 1200 QSOs on 160m in 2010′ operation log there is still big demand for this band as well. So we decided to put the special attention to those bands. Anyhow expedition will operate on all HF bands CW, RTTY and SSB. We are getting some enquires from such remote from PJ5 countries as JA & BY for skeeds. We will pay a special attention for Asia and far east anyhow propagation windows are very narrow to those direction (about 40 minutes on 40m and 15 minutes on 80 meters). So would you please send  e-mails with some SWL reports from those regions of the world and we will follow the instruction. After tomorrow we are starting towards Sint Eustatius (called Statia by the  local people) with 150 kg of luggage, mostly equipment and antennas as we don’t need to much clothes on the warm island ( 30C  day/25 C night). If everything go up to the schedule we start our operation on Thursday early afternoon local time (around 17 UTC). See you on the air.

Latest news…

Peraparations are going on. Everything is almost ready. Our plan is to travel to Warsaw by car on October 18. We will stay in a hotel near the airport for one night. On October 19 in the very early morning we go to the Warsaw Airport and we are going to meet Tom SP5UAF and Bogdan SP5WA there. After checking-in perhaps it will be enough time to have a coffee. Then we will enter the restricted area while Tom and Bogdan will take care of our car. Next we will start our flight towards St. Eustatius.

In the meantime we received the first support via the PayPal. It came from  Tony JA1GCA. Thank you so much, our friend. It is very important to us and we really appreciate it.

Tests of a spiderbeam

During the first half of October Janusz SP6IXF checked if he has all parts of the spiderbeam and then tested the antenna. This antenna is used only during DXpeditions or portable activities – usually once or twice a year.

So Janusz decided to put all the parts together and check the SWR. It the same time it was a very good exercise: it will be possible to build the antenna much faster when they are on St. Eustatius.

The antenna works fine and now, after dismantling, it is packed and ready to travel to Caribbean.

Some pictures from the tests are placed in the picture gallery.

Presentation

On October 1 during the annual meeting of the SP DX Club Włodek SP6EQZ made a presentation about the last year DXpedition and also about the plans and preparation of this year event. There were many pictures and lots of interesting information.

Almost everything is ready. Last days Włodek SP6EQZ and Janusz SP6IXF tested the Siderbeam and made some tests and trainings (to quickly set it up on the island)
