St. Eustatius DXpedition 2011

Tropical storm over Statia

We had a big tropical storm during the night with heavy rain, lightings and hurricane wind.
As a result of the storm our K9AY antenna has been destroyed. Despite of problems we have over 16 K QSOs in the log.
We are running 2 stations on 24 & 28 MHz at the moment.

Some HAM friends from Japan worried about their QSOs as they were not in the online log for a while. As we informed there were problems with the Internet access on the island so it was impossible to update online logs. Now everything works again, logs are updated and Wlodek SP6EQZ just informed that all JA stations who asked about their QSOs are in the log. On the other hand they really can worry about the QSOs as PJ5 is like anipodes for them.

Wlodek informed in the email that they just had breakfast and they are starting another day of activity. They will be active on 10 and 12 meters and then move to lower bands as the propagation changes.

Wlodek PJ5/SP6EQZ tried 160, 80, 40 and 30 meters  last night but propagation conditions were very poor.

Internet is back. Online logs updated

Yesterday Wlodek PJ5/SP6EQZ informed that Internet services are back on the Island. So Janusz and Wlodek were able to upload their QSOs and update their online logs at Clublog.org.

We would like to inform you that they are not going to blame anyone for making a dupe QSO. Wlodek and Janusz are trying to upload all QSOs and they hope their online logs are complete. But you must know that miskates are possible. They are very active on bands and in fact they have very little time for matters other than resting and recovering. If you are not sure about your QSO, if you can’t find your QSO in the online log – work them again and don’t worry. Wlodek and Janusz are really happy to help everyone to make a QSO. So there are no any black lists or something like that. There is only HAM radio fun and pleasure.

News: no Internet access on the island

Just some minutes ago (at 11:30 UTC)  I had a phone call from Wlodek SP6EQZ. He called to inform about the latest important events from their DXpedition.

Fist of all  their equipment works fine and they are active on bands as much as possible. In general they are good mood and have a lot of HAM radio fun working on bands. Wlodek said about a huge number of stations form Japan and UA9/UA0. They really do they best to work everyone. At the moment there are about 15.000 QSOs in their logs all together.

The bad news is that for the last days  they had no Internet access. It is not only problem in their location but general problem on the whole island of St. Eustatius. Some locals said that sometimes there are even a week long breaks while they have no Internet. So as the result Wlodek and Janusz were not able to update their online logs last days. They will do it as soon as possible. Wlodek called me by phone to inform about it, asking to publish this information on the website.

News – October 26

After one day of rather hard propagation conditions (see information from previous days) the bands become alive again and Wlodek and Janusz came back to the operation routine which could be observed during the first days. Since the high bands are open you can find them there every days. Two days ago Wlodek sent a short email informing that together they had over 11.500 QSOs in their logs. So today it is surely much more.

OK – they are very active on high bands but they are also prepared for low band operation. Inverted L antenna is ready as well as RX antennas: K9AY and beverages.

New photographs were  published in the picture gallery.

The DXpedition received next valuable support. So far the help was received from the following friends: HB9CWA, IK7YZG, JA1BK, JA1GCA, K3RYA, SP1NY, SP9JZU, W1DYJ and SP DX Club. Thank You!!!

October 24 – Summary

Wlodek SP6EQZ informed that today the propagation conditions were not so good as previous days. There was very strong and rapid QSB. Signals were just disapearing even during the report transmission. So working on the radio required much more motivation today. In the end Wlodek felt from exhaustion and had to have a rest while Janusz SP6IXF was still trying to wake up the propagation. Each of the operators have already logged over 4000 QSOs.

During the station setup they had a lot of help from George – a man who lives close to their QTH and helped them with antennas. There is also a lady who lives in the neighborhood and provides food supplies and catering. So after all they really have a lot of time for the radio.

The last efforts to send pictures from the DXpediton failed. We are trying to solve it to be able to publish also photo-news on the website and in the picture gallery. Stay tunned…

News – online log updated…

Janusz and Wlodek were very active on high bands last days. They were heard in Europe for long periods of time with good reports. Since the propagation conditions are quite fine on higher bands it was a chance for many European stations to work a new one on 10m and/or 12m.

It also seems that now everything works correctly with Clublog.org and yesterday all QSOs were uploaded to online logs. So if if you are not sure if you are in the log just check it yourself.

Thanks for new support that was received last days. So far the valuable support has been received from tyhe following friends: HB9CWA, IK7YZG, JA1BK, JA1GCA, SP1NY, SP9JZU, W1DYJ and the  SP DX Club. Thank you!

News – online log and website problems

Wlodek SP6EQZ informed that yesterday they had problems to upload their logs to Clublog.org. The upload process just stops at 25%. They are trying to clarify this issue and asked Clublog.org for their help. At least we are aware, that the online log will not be up to date for some time.

In the meantime Ari OH6MW informed (via SP6AEG) that he had problems when opening the website in IE8. Last days we added some Javascrip here. Perhaps this is the reason. The website was checked in IE7, IE9, Firexof, Opera and Chrome. There were no problems. However as IE8 is often used we will change the script to avoid possible problems of our visitors.

Propagation on 12 & 10 meters

We had excellent propagation conditions on the bands yesterday. We worked with many EU station (including crowds from SP) till their late night. Two hours after our sunset we still worked with JA and Russian far east.  Propagation was still on but we were completely exhausted after whole day of operation so we apologize for somebody disapoitment. We will be back with you shortly. Today we are going to repeat our activity on 12 & 10m. All our antennas are set up. In the morning we are going to trunk the last two beverages on the nearest Round Hill (EU direction). 160m CW operation to EU is expected during the night. Be with us!

Latest news: 2011-10-21, 16:40 UTC

The spiderbeam antenna is up and running. It is placed on a 8 meters high pole. Unfotunately the house has a big metal roof and the antenna is located too close to it which makes some problems.

In the meantime John G3LZQ informed that he searched the the online log and found his QSO on 40 meters while it was made on 80 meters. The team was informed  about this matter and they will surely review the log for possible problems and correct all found errors. Thanks for pointing it out.

The DXpedition received next support. Wlodek and Janusz really appreciate it. Thanks to HB9CWA, IK7YZG, JA1BK, JA1GCA, SP1NY, SP9JZU and the  SP DX Club.
